The 5th annual Hats For Hope auction was held Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center. Here are a few photos from our 2008 event. Thank you all for your support and participation.
The auction featured approximately 200 fabulous hats, as well as a wide variety of “non-hat” items for bid. Here are some of the auction items that contributed to the success of Hats for Hope again this year. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors and guests, we donated over $60,000 to the fight against breast cancer in 2008.

This array of hats is a few of many donated by ladies who attended the 2007 KY Derby and did not want to travel home with their hats. Hats for Hope was invited to be present at the Louisville Airport to accept donations for our 2008 event. The volunteers available heard many heart warming stories from breast cancer survivors or from family members of survivors. It was a wonderful experience because every corner of this planet deals with the fallout from this devastating disease. We are honored that we were invited to participate in this. |

Maria Curcic (Le Chapeau Rouge) was born in Paris, France, where she studied Piano, Art, and Ballet. She moved to Canada when she was eight years old. Her creative nature led her to ACAD(Alberta College of Art and Design) where she majored in Drawing. With a strong interest in Millinery since she was a child, she apprenticed in millinery design in 1991 for over a year in Paris. Today, in her studio in downtown Calgary Alberta Canada she works on many custom pieces. Each hat is unique and true to her nature: feminine, bold, majestic and timeless. The work exudes confidence and she is not afraid to try new things with designs or materials. No trends are followed, she believes that designers should lead and push boundaries. The hats mix both modern influences as well as historical. All works are handmade with attention to quality and pristine catch on detail. Maria believes that a hat is more than an accessory; it is a form of expression and must be worn with sheer confidence. |

"Hope": Derby hat with 8" brim, panama handwoven straw, satin ribbon and floral; donated by Jacqueline Ryan of Jax-Hatz
Jax put herself through art school in San Francisco where she learned about color and design, all the while designing and dreaming of hatz. She became a Visual Merchandiser for the Emporium until its untimely demise in 1996, which left her career in limbo. This is where she likes to say that fate and destiny intervened. At a friend's urging and insistence that she should be selling her hatz and armed with the knowledge that enthusiasm and a creative spirit could probably make up for her lack of business acumen, she launched JAX HATZ. |

Blue, hand dyed sinamay straw and silk hat, sprinkling of freshwater pears from Ann deVuono's current collection of millinery – Each of deVuono's hats is put together one at a time with exquisite quality. Each flower, leaf, and decoration is created completely by hand in her Seattle studio. Whether ordering directly for something unique or wholesale for your shop, the attention to detail is unsurpassed. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Ann deVuono was trained in classical ballet. The influence costumes had on her during her years performing led to her passion for headdresses. Her millinery skills were developed costuming for dance and theatre companies. This was followed by numerous private commissions.
Ms. deVuono is a previous recipient of an Artist Trust GAP Award for outstanding work and she is always involved in community service through her art. Since 2003, she has been a featured artist at The Kentucky Museum of Arts and Design. |

Santa Monica Sasha by Twiggy Originals
Carla Terwilleger, also known in the art world as "Twiggy," always knew she wanted to be an artist when she grew up. She focuses on what she knew best: transforming Friday nights into masterpieces. Twiggy has sold close to 500 individual paintings, a few large commissions, has had over 20 shows/exhibits and numerous write-ups in publications nationwide, most recently making cameos in both American Salon and American Spa magazines.
While Twiggy paints a bevy of things, she is best known for her voluptuous femme fatales. With an eye for fashion and a mild obsession with glossy magazines, Twiggy claims women are the most fun to paint; dressing them in high couture, giving them fabulous hair styles and accentuating their best assets. Twiggy's girls never wait for a drink, don't need a date to celebrate and can get just about anything they want. Most of all, Twiggy’s girls emulate her own way of life: living out loud!
I hope you will enjoy Santa Monica Sasha, in all of her glory. |
